67-year-old Frieda Laing has been ordered to pay a fine of £200 and compensation of £350 after her Lakeland Terrier attacked a young boy.
The boy was playing with his brother on a grassed area near his home in Mayfield, Edinburgh when the dog attack happened.
The boy recognised the dog as belonging to someone local and knew the dog was named ‘Pip’. The dog is reported to have ran up to the boy, jumped and bit him on the right cheek leaving a deep open wound. The boy also had cuts to his mouth.
Fiscal depute Sally Clark said: “His brother was frightened and tried to get the dog off but it ran away. Blood was gushing from his mouth and he was extremely shaken and was screaming.”
Police went to Laing’s house where she admitted a garden gate had been left open allowing the dog to escape. Laing had the dog put to sleep the same day.
Sheriff Neil MacKinnon told Laing: “This is a serious matter but I am impressed by the remorse you have expressed.”
Laing was also banned from owning a dog for 3 years.
