A teenager was killed and his mother seriously injured when a lorry hit them whilst making their way to the hard shoulder. It is thought the pair had been involved in an earlier road accident on the A1 northbound near Scotch Corner.
Fire crews worked for 3 hours to free the teen who was trapped in the wreckage but unfortunately the victim did not survive.
A fire service spokesman said: “It was a long and protracted rescue in very difficult conditions and sadly the casualty did not survive.”
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said that the mother and son had been travelling in a Peugeot 307 which crashed into the central barrier at around 10pm on Tuesday 6th January. The vehicle was left stationary in the road whilst the occupants walked to the hard shoulder.
The spokesperson said: “A young male was found to be dead at the scene, while a female was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.”
“Formal identification has yet to take place but it is believed that the injured parties were related as mother and son and came from the Northumberland area.”
