A 16 year old girl was in hospital last night after a mountain bike accident in Scotland

The teen was on an activity day organised by Ancrum Outdoor Centre which is owned by  Dundee City Council. It is believed that the girl lost control of her bike at the Rumbling Bridge, Dunkeld and fell 90ft down a gorge before landing in the River Tay.

She was retrieved from the water by people who happened to be in the area at the time which was just after 1pm. A tricky emergency services rescue followed.

A local paramedic stayed with the injured girl until the helicopter crew from HMS Gannet winched her to safety before transferring her to Ninewells Hospital.

Tayside Fire and Rescue station manger Mr Lennon said: “Looking over the bridge you wonder how anyone could survive. This girl is very, very lucky to be alive”

The girl suffered abdominal injuries and possible hypothermia, she is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

Mr Lennon went on to say: “It is a very dangerous area where she fell. She was been extremely lucky to have missed the rocks and fallen straight into the water.”

A spokesperson for the Dundee City Council said: “When the accident happened a group of pupils from the school was taking part in a fully supervised outdoor activity. The route they were taking has been used many times in the past by pupils on similar supervised cycling activities. We will co-operate fully with any external investigation and will also be carrying out our own assessment of the situation.”
