A pensioner in Upminster has launched a clinical negligence claim after receiving surgery on his arm. Mr Palmer, 70, suffered a personal injury on his right arm after falling from a ladder. He was taken to Queens Hospital in Romford where they discovered Mr Palmer had a four part fracture dislocation. The scheduled surgery due to take place the day after the accident was cancelled so Mr Palmer decided to go private.
Surgeon Chukwuedo Iwegbu approached Mr Palmer at his bedside and offered to operate on his arm injury at Spire Roding Hospital later that day. At the hospital Mr Palmer was asked to pay £2000 upfront for his surgery.
A month later Palmer received a call from the hospital saying they were investigating the surgeons performance and to obtain a second opinion. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Simon Lambert discovered that a nerve had been split in the previous operation which meant that one third of the deltoid muscle would suffer permanent paralysis.
Mr Palmer has developed avascular necrosis and will need a complete shoulder replacement.
Mr Iwegbu was banned from operating on children and accepting locum posts. He is only permitted to work for the NHS in Trauma & Orthopaedics under supervision of a consultant. Iwegbu gained his qualifications at Russia’s Rostov-on-Don Medical College in 1973 where he achieved first class honours, In the 1980’s he became a Professor of Orthopaedics in Zaire.
