A lorry driver with one eye has admitted causing a fatal accident where his colleague was killed. William Seago, aged 52, was a dustbin lorry driver at the time of the fatal road accident.
Mr Seago was born with no sight in his right eye, so had illegally passed his driving test by memorising the bottom two lines of his eye exam to avoid failing due to his eye injury. At Bristol Crown Court, Mr Seago admitted that he had read the eye chart with his left eye, memorised the letters and then repeated these when asked to read them with his right eye.
The accident at work happened as Mr Seago was performing a three-point turn. Although only going 6mph at the time of the accident, the 26-tonne dustbin lorry went over his colleague and friend Keith Warman, causing his death.
Mr Seago will be sentenced on 2nd November after admitted making a false statement and careless driving. However, he is likely to escape a prison sentence after the judge ruled that the death of Keith Warman, aged 55, was due to a “momentary lack of attention”.
