A four star hotel in Edinburgh has been fined £20,000 for Health and Safety offences after a worker received serious burns.
The work accident happened when a portable grate was moved but still had fuel lit underneath. The employee who had not received formal training suffered burns from the flamed sticky fuel.
Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club have been fully co-operative during the investigation and has immediately ensured that an accident like this will not happen again.
Robert Aldridge, Edinburgh City Council’s environment leader, said: “This was an extremely distressing accident involving an employee who had not been given the appropriate training.”
“This accident should remind all employers of the importance of carrying out a thorough risk assessment for work activities, which could be dangerous, to protect the safety of employees.”
“It also highlights the need for employers to make sure that staff are trained in using all equipment. This accident could have been prevented had a proper risk assessment taken place and a staff training regime been in place.”
