A 72 year old British man has stunned doctors by miraculously growing a new piece of skull. Gordon Moore had part of his skull removed following a car accident in the 1950s. A titanium plate had been fitted to protect Mr Moore’s brain. However, due to an infection doctors had to remove the titanium plate, and were shocked to discover that new skull had grown underneath the metal.
The front section of Mr Moore’s skull from his eyes to his ears had completed regenerated at some point over the 50 years following his accident. According to reports this discovery is so rare that it is understood that it has only ever been reported once before, not just in the UK, but anywhere else in the world.
Mr Moore said: “I was amazed when they told me and obviously very pleased at the same time.
“They took the infected plate out and found I had grown a completely new skull underneath, so they just stitched me up.
“I’ve been reassured that everything is fine, but apparently it’s very, very rare. They were totally amazed.
“I was being prepared to walk around with a safety helmet on for a few months, but now it’s just not necessary.
“Although they say bone does grow through time, it’s never half a skull like this. My new skull is the exact same shape as the metal plate.
“I’ve asked if they will give me the plate back as a souvenir, but I haven’t received an answer yet.”
