A man was killed after his BMW car skidded on ice on a road in Somerset.

Parish leaders in Easton-in-Gordano are asking their local council to inspect drains and culverts on the busy A369 where the car accident happened.

It is believed that although the roads had been gritted in preparation for the drop in the temperature, the blocked drains spilled water onto the road resulting in black ice.

Gerry Hunt, Easton-in-Gordano and Pill Parish Council chairman and councillor said: “I think it would be sensible precaution to ask the council to check the drains as a result of this accident to ensure that they are flowing properly and are not blocked.”

Villagers have also asked for a speed limit reduction.

Nick Yates of North Somerset Council said: “We have a programme of drain maintenance. Since the A369 was closed on Tuesday, as a result of the accident we took the opportunity to do some gully clearing.”
