A baby was found to be ’safe’ after the ambulance it was travelling in was involved in a road traffic accident with a car. The head-on collision that killed the driver of the car happened at around 1pm on Sunday 1st November on the East Cowes Road, Whippingham.
The passenger of the car suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital and a seven year old boy who was seated in the back also received minor injuries.
The driver of the ambulance and a paramedic that was travelling in the back of the ambulance with the baby both incurred injuries.
The ambulance was responding to a 999 call where the seriously ill baby needed transferring from an Isle of Wight hospital to a specialist hospital on the mainland.
A Hampshire Police spokeswoman said: ‘Police were called after a serious crash between a car and an ambulance in East Cowes Road, near the racecourse on the Isle of Wight.
‘The ambulance was responding when the crash took place and those members of the public on board were not harmed and have been transferred to another ambulance.
‘A man who was travelling in the car has been pronounced dead at the scene, and one other person involved has very serious injuries.’
Hampshire Police are appealing for anyone that witnessed this car accident to come forward with information.
