A convicted rapist in Australia who sexually assaulted his stepdaughter twice in a six month period in 2000 has been ordered to pay his victim AU$30,750 (£20,400) in criminal injury compensation.

On both occasions he used chloroform to drug the child, who was 12 years old, and on the second occasion he took pictures of himself raping the girl.

His actions came to light when the girl told her mother that she woke with her underpants fitted incorrectly. Her mother confronted her partner and found the chloroform and pornographic material hidden in the house.

Three months later, her mother came across the pictures of her partner’s deeds hidden in his car together with other pictures of her daughter naked.

The offences were committed in Brisbane, Australia.

In 2002, the man admitted to one count of rape, two counts of using a stupefying drug with intent, and five counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16. He also admitted he had learned how to use chloroform from the internet and purchased it from a chemist.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison, but was recommended for release after serving a third of the sentence.

In Judge Ian Dearden’s published judgement, he acknowledged that the girl was left feeling vulnerable and violated by the actions of her stepfather.

In court it was stated that throughout her teens she suffered with behavioural problems, abused alcohol, and often suffered with panic attacks. They also heard she found it difficult to maintain friendships, had a poor school performance, and her relationship with her family had suffered.
